Mastering Names: A Comprehensive Lesson Plan For Common And Proper Nouns

1. The Hook: The “General vs. Special” Story

Start by telling the students a quick story: “Imagine if everyone in the world was just called ‘Boy’ or ‘Girl.’ If I said, ‘Hey, Boy, come here!’, everyone would be confused! That’s why we have special names. ‘Boy’ is a Common Noun, but ‘Leo’ is a Proper Noun.”

2. Direct Instruction (The Definition)

Use an anchor chart to display the definitions:

• Common Nouns: General names for people, places, or things. They do not start with a capital letter (unless at the beginning of a sentence).

  • Examples: dog, park, teacher, cereal.

• Proper Nouns: Specific names for people, places, or things. They always start with a capital letter.

  • Examples: Buddy, Disneyland, Mrs. Smith, Cheerios.

3. Interactive Activity: The “Noun Sort”

Nothing beats a hands-on sort to solidify this concept.

• Preparation: Create a set of cards with words like restaurant, McDonald’s, month, January, planet, Mars, boy, Jack.

• The Task: Have students work in pairs to sort the cards into two columns: “Common” and “Proper.”

• The Twist: Ask them to notice what all the Proper Nouns have in common (the “Big Letters”).

4. Guided Practice: The “Fix-It” Sentences

Write three sentences on the board with lowercase proper nouns. Have students come up and “rescue” the sentences by capitalizing the correct words.
